The auto and tech industries are investing billions to get the technology to market, but the regulatory environment at the local, state, and federal levels is uncertain. The land use and real estate development communities will have to innovate to change the way space is used and buildings are constructed. Areas such as Northern Virginia, with its large, highly educated work force stand to benefit the most. Among the most pressing questions are:
If you are involved in any aspect of commercial real estate, this technology will affect your business. You need to come to this program and find out more.

On Wednesday, February 22, please join NAIOP Northern Virginia for Lunch with ... Allison Silberberg, Mayor of Alexandria, and Mark Jinks, City Manager of Alexandria. Ms. Silberberg was elected Mayor in November of 2015 and is finishing her first year in office. Prior to becoming Mayor, she served one term on the Alexandria City Council as Vice Mayor. She has over 20 years of experience in community leadership and public service having worked on Capitol Hill and in the non-profit community. Mark Jinks joined the city government in 1999 as the city's Chief Financial Officer. Ten years later he was appointed Deputy City Manager with responsibility for a variety of aspects of city government including land use planning, zoning, historic preservation, transportation, environmental protection, code administration, and affordable housing. Ultimately he was appointed City Manager in 2015.
Alexandria has long enjoyed a solid economy with steady economic growth. 2017 will see the arrival of the National Science Foundation in Eisenhower East and new commercial development around the future Potomac Yard Metro. At the same time challenges with funding for Metro, stormwater capacity and combined stormwater-sanitary systems are challenging the City's ledgers. As the City enters budget discussions for FY2018 don't miss this opportunity to hear from the Mayor and City Manager about the financial and program challenges and how they plan to achieve the city's priorities for 2017.

On Wednesday, January 18, the NAIOP Northern Virginia Developing Leaders will host a program with Len Forkas, the author of What Spins the Wheel. In his book, Forkas shares team-building lessons such as the power of forgiveness and gratitude, knowing your limits, and honoring roles. Through the success of this book, he has been asked to share these lessons in speeches across the United States including appearances on CNN Anderson Cooper 360, Fox 5-WTTG, Fox & Friends, and WJLA ABC7.
Forkas has worked in the local real estate and technology communities through his companies, Milestone Communities and Milestone Communications. In 2003, as a result of his son's successful battle with leukemia, he founded Hopecam, a non-profit dedicated to providing the webcam technology which benefits cancer-stricken children around the world. His unrelenting dedication to Hopecam compelled him to accept a daunting fundraising challenge. In 2012, he competed in one of the world's toughest endurance events: Race Across America, a 3,000-mile, coast-to-coast solo bicycle race that participants must finish in 12 days -- Forkas finished in 11.
Join us as we start the new year with an inspiration conversation with Len Forkas.
