The lunch and learn series of programs are small educational events held throughout the year that focus on specific topics within the commercial real estate development industry. Topics are selected by the Developing Leaders Committee from areas such as legal, marketing, management, finance, construction, technology, development, and professional development.
Smart Buildings: Technology is evolving at an unprecedented pace. We seem to be 5-10 years away from the autonomous vehicle being the new norm. We can now stand in our kitchen, say "set the mood" and our homes can dim the lights, turn on slow jazz and light a fireplace. The age of the Jetsons' is truly upon us. With the possibilities endless, we are now only bound by our imagination.
The couple of examples above are made possible through connectivity. The obstruction sensors on the perimeter of the vehicle can communicate to the engine and steering wheel, and can guide the vehicle to its destination. The home automation devices can communicate with the user directly, and control the components of the home.
Commercial real estate professionals can take advantage of connectivity to better maintain a facility, provide a better occupant experience, provide better security, save energy ... etc. Successfully constructing and maintaining a smart building requires two things, the technology must exist and there must be a collaborative effort from all parties throughout the life cycle of the building.
During the presentation we will discuss new technologies, demonstrate the value they can bring to a facility and its stakeholders, and discuss the process to develop, design and construct Smart Buildings.

The annual DL Holiday Wrapping Party will be held on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at Baker Tilly. The wrapping party is in support of the Developing Leaders gift donation to Second Story (formerly Alternative House). Come and spend as much time as your schedule permits. Feel free to invite colleagues who are potential DL members. The wrapping party will run until all the presents have been wrapped.
Second Story has provided us with a wishlist of gifts for participants in their Teen Shelter and Young Mothers programs. To facilitate this, a Google doc has been created that lists all of the items requested and allows you to select the gift(s) you would like to provide.
This year, there are more than 70 recipients (almost double that of 2016). The DLs have set a goal to donate at least one gift for each person. Last year, several companies "adopted" recipients and donated most of the items they requested. Hopefully we can exceed our goal again this year and make everyone's wish a reality. Second Story has requested that all gift card donations be in smaller denominations of $5 or $10. The deadline to "adopt" a recipient is December 5.
If you are unable to attend the event but would still like to donate a gift or gifts for the children at Second Story - please contact Spencer Teel, steel@teelconstruction.com, for information on alternate donation drop-off options.
If you plan to attend - please contact Benita Stocks, bstocks@naiopva.org.

On Wednesday, January 18, the NAIOP Northern Virginia Developing Leaders will host a program with Len Forkas, the author of What Spins the Wheel. In his book, Forkas shares team-building lessons such as the power of forgiveness and gratitude, knowing your limits, and honoring roles. Through the success of this book, he has been asked to share these lessons in speeches across the United States including appearances on CNN Anderson Cooper 360, Fox 5-WTTG, Fox & Friends, and WJLA ABC7.
Forkas has worked in the local real estate and technology communities through his companies, Milestone Communities and Milestone Communications. In 2003, as a result of his son's successful battle with leukemia, he founded Hopecam, a non-profit dedicated to providing the webcam technology which benefits cancer-stricken children around the world. His unrelenting dedication to Hopecam compelled him to accept a daunting fundraising challenge. In 2012, he competed in one of the world's toughest endurance events: Race Across America, a 3,000-mile, coast-to-coast solo bicycle race that participants must finish in 12 days -- Forkas finished in 11.
Join us as we start the new year with an inspiration conversation with Len Forkas.
